Fresh Starts in September

Tuesday 13 September

Hi everyone. It’s been a while since a blog post but I’m back now with lots to share.

The main topic of this blog post is on a concept I like to call “September Scaries”. There should definitely be a word in the Oxford Dictionary that depicts this feeling – the anxiety people often feel as we move away from summer and into a new season and academic year. If I were to compare it to any other feeling, it would be Hangxiety, a newly coined term relating to the anxiety you feel when hungover, or the Sunday Scaries – anxiety of a new week looming.

However, the September Scaries are different. Autumn (or Fall) is my favourite season. Although the leaves fall, the days get shorter, the sun sets earlier, and the start of SAD season begins, I love the atmosphere and mood it creates. The season may be a symbol of, perhaps, death and loss (the leaves, the darkness etc.) – for me it’s a chance to start over.

I have always loved the first day back at school in September. You get a new slate, a fresh page. A chance to start over. That holds so much potential and thrill. Doesn’t it make you excited?

Join me and fall in love with September. Now is time to splurge on autumnal outfits (big jumpers and Uggs!), candles and new school supplies. Autumn is the season to fall in love with your life again – romanticise it. This is something I often preach because it is so beneficial. I wouldn’t have got through the last five months – when I started my healing journey – if it wasn’t for this concept. Treat every cup of coffee like it’s the best one you’ve ever had. Every bite into a warm croissant or banana bread in the local café, drinks with friends. Romanticise the walks home from walk or school. Put on your favourite playlist. Snuggle up under a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate (with all the toppings) watching Gilmore Girls or your favourite seasonal films, with a pumpkin candle burning in the background. Take this time to make Autumn yours, it only comes around once a year.

I wanted to talk about fresh starts in general because a lot of the time people get lost in the idea. As much as I have talked about it above, September isn’t the only chance you get for a fresh start. As Taylor would say, every day is a new chance to be brand new. That’s why I love Mondays too. It’s a chance for a fresh start for a new week. Why do people fear it so much? You can start over and become someone completely new, smashing new goals. But there’s no pressure.

So, this season take a moment to ask yourself what you want to get out of it. Who do you want to become, what do you want to achieve? Why? I also wanted to chat about it as I have just moved back to university, and if you’ve read my other blogs you will know how much I struggled last year. There was so much anxiety and fear about coming back, but I’ve done it. I’m proud of the little win in just moving my things in. There is no pressure to do anything I don’t want to do this year. I thought I wanted to get back into hockey, but I have realised my heart is not set on it and that’s ok. Take care of yourself and understand that some days will be harder than others, especially as the days get shorter and darker and the weather gets gloomier. Enjoy the season and drink all the Pumpkin Spice Lattes you can, I know I will be!

Pepetoe love ❤
