Create Realistic Goals for a Productive Year

Are you sticking to your New Year’s Resolutions this year, or have you already fallen off?

Don’t worry, I’m not that kind of blog to condescend you for “failing” at any resolution. I’m quite the opposite! A solution? Don’t set vague and unrealistic resolutions in the first place!

I’ve been feeling quite overwhelmed (well, a lot overwhelmed) recently, as the New Year rush has kicked in both at work and in my personal work. It can be daunting to have so many dreams and hopes for the year, but it can also be a good thing remember!

I sat down two nights ago and creating about a dozen reminders on my phone for the next day, from things like write all my blogs posts, to create new Reel templates, to learn everything for my PT course, and actual work-related stuff for my 9-5. Yesterday, as the reminders were popping through (all day frickin’ long), I wanted to cry. It’s not a bad thing to want to get so much done, however, you have time.

With all transparency, I am the type of person to be flooded with motivational streaks, and I mean big ones. The kind that hits me at 11pm at night and I want to rush to my desk to get everything done. Do I do this? 99% of the time no – because I set boundaries for myself, duh – but once upon a time I did.

The lesson here is that you don’t need to rush to get everything done that night, or when that motivation hits, because you’re going to have more and more of those motivational periods further down the line. Yes, ok, motivation comes and goes – but it does come back! Plus, winter is a shit time for most of us, and all I want to do is stay in bed.

Think of it as putting all of your to do lists and dreams and things you want to get done (either short-term or long-term) into a big jar. Write them all down on Post-It notes, and maybe colour-coordinate them in terms of priority and deadlines. Leave it next to your desk, or out of the way if you think you might get overwhelmed just looking at it. The next time motivation comes along to say hi, pick out a few things and plod along with getting them done – again, there’s no rush! I’ve started to do this yesterday, after the reminders nearly caused me to throw my phone across the room (which I have done a few times before and we all know the bank account doesn’t appreciate it). Already, my mind is a little clearer, and when I get all my work done for my 9-5 in the day, I turn to this jar (and it’s filling up!) and get a couple things done, with no pressure if that motivation suddenly dissipates.

Look after yourself this year, and stay far away from everyone’s posts on socials about how amazing they are getting everything done and they’re on track with their NY Resolutions. Most of the time, they’re probably lying :)
