Overcoming Post-Holiday Blues: A Mindset Shift

It’s the third day into the New Year, and I hope you’re smashing it! But with this comes going back to work and getting into routine again…

January can be a gloomy month for a lot of people, with the festivities gone and put away til next year, and pay day not coming soon enough, it can be a long month. Basically, the post-holiday blues are getting super real right now. However, instead of chasing for the next best thing (in this case it’s probably pay day, or another celebratory period like upcoming birthdays), why don’t we sit in this beauty of a brand new year and look forward for what’s to come?

It’s a human condition to keep chasing and waiting for the next good thing to come: the weekend, a self-care day, a holiday. We chase and chase until we end up never living in the present moment. How sad is that? We all do it, though, and maybe it’s time we stop and think.

For me, this is THE best way to overcome the post-holiday blues. As I said, Jan can be a shit month for a lot of us, especially with the weather getting (somehow) even colder, and the thought of staying in bed all day long doesn’t go away. Why not make it a great month?

If that simple mindset shift doesn’t work for you (and that’s not surprising as it is rather difficult!), write down a list of 10 things that instantly lifts your mood. This can be anything from your favourite hot drink, to your favourite movie, or a bath, or a date night. Note them down and stick them somewhere on your wall, or as a phone screensaver, or just in your notes app. So, when you come to succumb to the post-holiday blues, reach for this list and find something that can lift your mood. It’ll be hard to do at first, but once you get into it, every day can feel special.

Stop chasing what’s to come and instead focus on how good you can make today. Live in the present moment, and learn to love every day like it’s your last!
