Take a step back for a second and ask yourself “do I ever judge myself?”. At first thought, the answer might be no. But if you look deeper, you will realise you do, and do so on a regular basis.
We all have societal beliefs and expectations drilled into our minds, from what we are supposed to wear, look like, behave, what job we’re supposed to have, what life path we are supposed to follow, especially in our 20s. If you analyse this further, though, how much of this is society telling you to do so, and how much of this is you?
I think we all have to take responsibility on this, as fortunately we are moving away from a fixed society where there are rules and pressures like I mentioned above, towards a much more accepting and tolerable place where we can do as we please, free from judgement. And so, really, these are expectations we have made up for ourselves.
Why? Because we judge ourselves on a daily basis with everything we do. And when someone questions us, asking us why we can’t do X and why we can’t do Y, we say “because no one else does this” or “I’ve been told I can’t”. Why? The person telling you you can’t, is you.
