Toxic Productivity

This week, our focus centres on productivity—the art of streamlining your work focus and safeguarding against burnout. If you’re seeking tips on optimising your efficiency while maintaining balance, you’re in the right place.

The feeling of accomplishing tasks throughout the day is indeed euphoric. It’s immensely satisfying to check off each item on your to-do list, witnessing tangible progress unfold before you. This sense of achievement not only boosts our morale but also fuels our motivation to tackle the next challenge.

However, here’s a crucial point we must acknowledge—the looming threat of toxic productivity, leading inevitably to burnout. Many of us have experienced the debilitating effects of burnout at some point, and it’s a sensation we’d all agree is far from pleasant. When we find ourselves caught in the trap of toxic productivity, relentlessly pursuing an ever-expanding list of tasks, burnout becomes an imminent reality. Often, it strikes at the most inconvenient times, leaving us overwhelmed and depleted. Yet, burnout isn’t just a sudden crash; it’s the culmination of weeks or months of relentless effort toward a goal, followed by a sudden, undeniable collapse—a cry for help from our mind and body for respite. As humans, we simply cannot sustain productivity 24/7, 365 days a year. Even those dedicated members of the “5 am club” face their limits. We all need time to rest, recharge, and rejuvenate—essential ingredients for sustained productivity and well-being.

So, how do we sidestep the treacherous path to burnout? The first step lies in recognising the signs—identifying the subtle cues that signal we’re veering dangerously close to exhaustion. For many, burnout manifests as a creeping sense of guilt when tasks remain unchecked or a pervasive anxiety when work spirals out of control. It’s that familiar agitation and frustration, the sleepless nights spent mulling over tomorrow’s tasks or succumbing to all-nighters in a desperate bid to catch up. When these feelings arise, it’s imperative to pause, reflect, and ask ourselves a simple question: “Am I stressed?” The answer, invariably, will be a resounding “yes.” In that moment, grant yourself permission to step back, to acknowledge that you’re running on empty and in dire need of respite.

If burnout is a recurring theme in your professional life, consider re-evaluating your work boundaries. For many, the typical 9-to-5 schedule serves as a rigid framework. However, it’s crucial to honour your designated “clock-out” time—physically and mentally. As you leave the office, allow yourself to disengage fully, embracing the sanctuary of home and the comforts it offers. Engage in activities that replenish your spirit—whether it’s preparing a nourishing meal, indulging in your favourite pastime, or simply unwinding with loved ones. Furthermore, don’t hesitate to communicate your struggles with your employer, your partner, or your family. More often than not, you’ll find a supportive network eager to assist and accommodate your needs.

Over the last few months, for example, I’d be working a 9-5 job, then working on my blog and podcast for 3 hours after that, add in exercise and productive routines and I was basically doing no self-care or having time to relax. I recognised that, with the help of my therapist, but also after a big breakdown about it. You would have noticed that I took a week off from publishing blog posts last week and that has truly helped me. This is an example of getting your priorities straight. If you’re doing too much outside of work, turn your attention back to work – that’s what I”ve been doing recently.

Ultimately, remember that it’s okay to rest. While a week-long hiatus may not always be feasible, a brief pause to reassess your priorities can work wonders. As I’ve recently discovered through my own journey, striking the right balance is essential for preserving your well-being and achieving sustainable success. By focusing on your top priorities and learning to delegate or defer lesser tasks, you can alleviate overwhelm and regain control over your workload. Above all, prioritise self-care and listen attentively to your mind and body—they are your most reliable guides on this journey.
