To the Girl I Used to Be

A Letter I Wish I Could Send Back in Time

Dear younger me,

If I could sit beside you for a moment, there are a few things I would want to tell you.

I know you spend a lot of time worrying. About how you look, about what people think of you, about whether you’re doing life the “right” way.

You compare yourself constantly, to friends, to strangers online, to versions of yourself you think you should already be.

But what you don’t realise yet is that you’re already enough.

You always were.

Your Body Was Never the Enemy

There will be moments in your life where you feel disconnected from your body.

You will look in mirrors and wish you saw something different. You will believe that happiness exists somewhere on the other side of changing yourself.

But one day you’ll realise something important.

Your body was never the enemy.

It was simply trying to carry you through life.

One day you’ll learn to treat it with kindness instead of criticism.

You Will Make Mistakes And That’s Okay

There will be decisions you wish you could take back.

You’ll trust people who don’t deserve it. You’ll say yes when you should say no. You’ll stay in places and relationships longer than you should.

But every one of those mistakes will teach you something.

They’ll teach you boundaries. Strength. Self-respect.

You won’t see it yet, but those experiences will shape the person you become.

There Will Be Times Where You Lose Your Voice

You will face some moments in your life when you feel like you can’t speak up

When you feel trapped. When you don’t feel safe. When you don’t feel confident enough to say “no” or to step up for what’s right.

You didn’t fail. You didn’t lose.

One day you will reclaim that voice, and work through everything you lost because of it.

Don’t let these moments break you, because at the end of it all, you’ll realise how strong you have become because of them.

One Day You’ll Be Proud of Yourself

Right now, you’re still trying to prove yourself.

But one day, you’ll realise you don’t need to.

You’ll become someone who has survived things you once thought would break you. Someone who understands her worth more deeply than she ever did before.

And when you look back at the girl you used to be, you won’t feel embarrassed by her insecurities.

You’ll feel compassion.

Because she was trying.

And that was enough.

Love,
Your future self.
