Why Fundraising for BEAT Matters: A Personal Perspective

It’s that time of year again… Eating Disorder Awareness Week is coming on 24th February 2025.

Last year, we raised over £500 for BEAT UK with my mum and me doing a sponsored walk, and it was amazing to see all the support sent our way. However, this time is going to be slightly different.

I’m not too bothered about donations, or “beating” our target (although support is always welcome for those who can spare a few quid). What my mum and I care about most this year is awareness.

Eating disorders are among the most misunderstood and overlooked mental health conditions, yet they deserve far greater attention and advocacy. This year we’ll bring our community together to celebrate recovery, support those still struggling, and amplify BEAT’s mission to change lives.

As someone 2.5 years into recovery from anorexia, I know firsthand the life-changing support BEAT can provide. My mum, my biggest supporter throughout my recovery, and I are determined to honour the charity that has played such a vital role for so many.

This year is an opportunity to educate, spark meaningful conversations, and highlight BEAT’s invaluable work. Through my work here on Pepetoe, and my mum’s work as a counsellor, we’re pushing for this topic to be talked about more often. Eating disorders are never highlighted on the news, despite their impact on so many people across the UK and the world. Awareness is what matters, not just donations.

That being said, it’s never too early to donate (only a month to go!). So, if you can spare anything, please head over to my JustGiving page, or click the button below.
