Winter Wellness: Beating the Seasonal Blues

January can be a blue time for everyone. With Christmas gone, and going back to work, it can feel very overwhelming. On top of that, in the UK the winter can come crashing down with colder and darker days approaching. However, it’s not all bad. We can learn to adjust to this month and still have an uplifted mood!

How do we beat the seasonal blues?

  1. Plan social time

    Spend time with friends and family. It can be hard, when all you want to do is stay in bed on the weekend and days off from work, however it is vital that you keep up your social schedule in order to avoid slipping down that depression slope.
  2. Prioritise self-care

    Make self-care a priority. Set aside time for activities that bring you joy, whether it’s reading, taking a long bath, or practicing mindfulness. Taking care of yourself can significantly improve your mental well-being.
  3. Get outside

    Despite the sun being low in the sky and rain coming down most days, it is still important to soak up as much sunlight as you can. Over the winter our vitamin D levels become depleted, thus it is important to get outside even in January
  4. Nourish your body

    Prioritise nourishing, warming foods to support your body during the colder months. Incorporate hearty soups, stews, and a variety of fruits and vegetables into your diet. Hydration is equally important, so sip on warm herbal teas to stay cosy and hydrated
  5. Create an aesthetic, cosy environment

    Romanticise your life to get through these hard months. Add blankets, candles and comforting smells to create this cosy environment, as this can have a positive impact on your well-being
  6. Focus on the present, but look to the summer

    I always preach being present and not thinking about the past or future. However, to get you through these next couple months, remember that spring is right around the corner (March 21st)! There are warmer and brighter days ahead of us.

Beating the seasonal blues at the start of dull January is all about embracing positivity and incorporating simple, uplifting practices into your routine. By infusing your days with light, connection, and self-care, you can kick off the year on a vibrant and positive note. Here’s to a January filled with warmth, motivation, and well-being!
